What should you do after a breakup? 5 things that will help you with the healing process.
Each breakup is unique, even if they all share similarities. Either way, the thing that cannot be denied is the hurt that you will be feeling right now. Whether you were together for 6 months or 6 years, these tips will help you along the journey to acceptance after a breakup.
Surround yourself with friends and family.
They will offer at least a little distraction and comfort to you when you need it most.
Go for a trip away.
Take some friends and go away for a daytrip, night or a weekend away. A change of scene may be just what you need, even if you cry half the time at least you are pushing yourself to do something out of your comfort zone that will help you rebuild you confidence even just slightly.
Keep your distance from your ex.
Both in person and virtually. That includes not checking when they were last seen online or what photo was last uploaded to their feed. You are keeping yourself stuck thinking about them by doing this. It is time to put you first- this doesn’t happen when you are obsessing over your ex. If you usually walk by their house to go to the shop, walk the long way round. If you usually shop at a particular supermarket, pick a different one.
Get rid of all the things that could cause you to be reminded of your ex. Make this less accessible to yourself- block, delete and hide all communications.
Get rid of the photos.
This may feel impossible at first and it will be because you have unrealistic hope of getting back together. If you can’t bring yourself to bin everything, just bag it up and give it to a trusted friend until you are ready. Put all online images on a memory stick or in a single folder and keep it somewhere you won’t access it until you are ready to get rid of it.
Talk to a professional.
Talking to friends and family may help a little but it isn’t enough. A professional can help guide you through the process in the best possible way. Breakup-help offers a free 20 minute telephone session to get you started. Book yours here.
